Somewhere Beyond the Sea is the hugely anticipated sequel to TJ Klune’s The House in the Cerulean Sea, one of the best-loved and best-selling fantasy novels of the past decade. Featuring gorgeous orange sprayed edges!
A magical house. A secret past. A summons that could change everything.
Arthur Parnassus lives a good life built on the ashes of a bad one.
He’s the master of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six dangerous and magical children who live there.
Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. He is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department In Charge of Magical Youth. And there’s the island’s sprite, Zoe Chapelwhite, and her girlfriend, Mayor Helen Webb. Together, they will do anything to protect the children.
But when Arthur is summoned to make a public statement about his dark past, he finds himself at the helm of a fight for the future that his family, and all magical people, deserve.

In this second installment of The Cerulean Chronicles, orphanage master Arthur Parnassus must navigate challenges from the remnants of DICOMY and DICOMA, all while protecting his partner Linus Baker and their magical children from a biased inspector sent by a new manager with her own agenda. Klune confronts the heavy themes of fear-based oppression against marginalized communities, but he balances these with humor and warmth that make the reading experience truly enjoyable.
The seven magical children under Arthur and Linus’ care offer some of the best laughs and heartwarming moments! Who could resist a seven-year-old Antichrist named Lucy, who loves “dead-people” music and dreams of making footie pajamas mandatory? The delightful cast also includes a grumpy garden gnome, a sensitive forest sprite, a quirky wyvern, a wise teen, a bellhop blob, and a theater-loving Yeti. Their interactions are not only entertaining but also showcase the beauty of found family and unconditional support.
If you enjoy audiobooks, I highly recommend listening to this series. Daniel Henning’s narration brings the characters to life in a way that enhances the experience. I followed along on my Kindle and cherished every moment. While the book can stand alone, reading the first installment adds so much depth to the characters and story.
In a time when we need more representation and understanding, Klune's writing is like a warm bowl of chicken soup—comforting and healing. If you appreciate heartfelt stories with a sprinkle of magic, this book and its predecessor are must-reads!
